Wente is America’s oldest continuously operated, family-owned winery and it is likely that all of the Chardonnay in California derives from the original Wente clone. Its Livermore vineyards,30 miles from San Francisco Bay, benefit from billowing fogs that roll in off the sea and help produce fruit with plenty of acidity to counter the variety’s inherent butteriness.

Their women-led winery specialises in Certified Sustainable wines. Their Morning Fog Chardonnay includes a small percentage of Gewrztraminer depending on the vintage (5% in 2023) which offers a lick of almost floral acidity, with Key lime pie flavours to complement hints of toasty oak and vanilla from barrel-aging.

Try it with richer seafood dishes, such as lobster Thermidor or turbot en crote.
