This is a really fresh and lively take on Viognier loads of peach, apricot and orange zest on the nose, with a bit of honeysuckle and a salty tang underneath. On the palate, its medium-bodied and zippy, with flavours of nectarine, pineapple, and dried apricot, rounded off with a savoury touch of bay leaf and sage. Its not overly floral or rich like some Viogniers instead, its all about freshness, energy, and food-friendliness.
Try this withThai green curry, grilled courgette and artichoke salad with lemon dressing ora herby Boursin on oatcakes.
Its Viognier, but not as you know it. Super refreshing and not too heavy, its great if you usually go for something like Sauvignon Blanc or Albario but fancy a change. Its got real lift and texture the sort of wine you can take to a BBQ and get people talking.
Via Progreso is the passion project of Gabriel Pisano, part of one of Uruguays best-known wine families. Gabriel set out to do something a bit different he built a small experimental winery just outside Montevideo in the Canelones region and started playing around with styles you dont often see in Uruguay.
This Viognier is part of his Overground range, which is all about modern winemaking and showcasing lesser-used grapes. The fruit comes from his familys vineyard near Progreso, where the vines grow in gentle hills with clay-limestone soils not far from the Atlantic, so they get a nice sea breeze that helps keep the grapes fresh.
What makes this wine stand out is that the grapes were picked a touch earlier than usual just underripe to keep the acidity bright. That stops the wine from becoming too heavy or oily (which can happen with Viognier), and instead you get this lively, clean style. Fermentation is done with a light touch, minimal interference, and a focus on preserving fruit character. No oak, no fuss just fruit-forward, fresh, and full of life.
