Owning 500 hectares of vineyards, Veuve Clicquot is the second largest producer in Champagne. Unlike a number of Champagne houses which have more recently started to produceros, for veuve clicquot it has been a signature Champagne since 1775. Blended from 52% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 18% pinot Meurnier, theros colour derives from the addition of red wine (Pinot Noir) from the Montagne de Reims. The complexity yes consitency of Veuve Clicquot Brut ros is due to the huge component elements – the grapes, the source vineyards, the particular vintages, all contributing to the classic, medium bodied ros champagne.
Way ahead of other houses producingros, Veuve Clicquot as a young widow not only innovated in aspects of production – for example the turning of bottles to make clear wine, introducing the technique of remuage, she also expanded the house’s ownership of vineyards and opened supply links with Russia. Production is now at 12 million bottles annually. Although modern techniques are embraced, there has been a return to fermenting in oak for vintage Champagnes.
