Spanish wine is wonderfully varied and alive with character. This case brings six wines that offer a chance to try the classic styles the country is know for such as the oak-aged red of Rioja, and the sublime sparkling wine of Cava, as well as the rising stars and undiscovered gems like Albarino in Galicia and the wines of Valencia. The are great wines to try with a range of tapas plates or simply enjoy with a nibble of Parma ham and olives. If you’re looking to explore the wines of Spain, this is the case for you.
“If you love Rioja and want to discover more about Spanish wine, this is the case for you. A journey in wine taking in some classics and showcasing our favourites that keep us coming back for more.”
Francesc Ricart, Cava Brut NV, 11.5% Catalunya
One of our favourite sparkling wines, this cava has a brilliant balance of aromatic peach and citrus fruit with the delicate honey and rich toasty depth that gives it a moreish drinkability. Great as a gift, to toast any celebration or maybe pair with a slice of Spanish tortilla.
Granbazan, Etiqueta Ambar Albarino, 12.5% Rias Baixas
We love Albario, and this is a superb example from the grape’s heartland of Rias Baixas in north-west Spain. It captures the pure, concentrated fruit and lip-smacking freshness that makes this grape so appealing. I’d enjoy it with a plate garlicky langoustines.
Bodegas Palacio, Glorioso Blanco,12%Rioja
A bright and refreshing white Rioja, Glorioso Blanco is a beautifully balanced wine with layers of fresh citrus, crisp apple, and white flowers. Theres a touch of ripe stone fruit and a delicate pastry-like richness, thanks to time spent on the lees. Smooth and rounded, it finishes with a zesty lift, making it a joy to drink.
Can’ Leandro, L’Arenal, 13.5%, Valencia
Can Leandro LArenal is a bold, expressive red made from 100% Monastrell grapes grown in a single plot vineyard in Valencia. It greets you with enchanting aromas of violets, ripe black fruits, and a whisper of smoky spice. On the palate, its rich and savoury, with a perfect balance of fruit and spice that lingers beautifully on the finish.
Bodegas Palacio, Glorioso Reserva, 14% Rioja
This delicious Rioja Reserva was a big customer favourite at our inaugural focus group tasting. It is easy to see why with generous fruit and well-balanced oak giving complexity and a silky texture.I’d enjoy this simply with somegrilled lamb chops.
El Escoces Volante, Manga del Brujo Tinto, 14.5% Calatayud
This medium-bodied Spanish red comes from the rugged hills of Calatayud in Aragn, crafted by Master of Wine Norrel Robertson – also known as El Escocs Volante (The Flying Scotsman). Loads of ripe black fruit, warming spice, and a touch of herbal lift. Generous and velvety, with soft tannins and a long, satisfying finish.
