Quinta do Cardo is a historic wine estate in Beira Interior, Portugal, located on a plateau at 750 metres near the Douro International Reserve and Castelo Rodrigo. Characterised by granite and schist soils, abundant water, and a rugged, mountainous landscape, it offers ideal conditions for wine production. The regions continental climatewith cold winters, hot dry summers, and cool nightsplays a key role in the ripening of grapes and the quality of the wines.
Established in 1932, Quinta do Cardo spans 180 hectares, with 79 hectares of certified organic vineyards situated on sunlit slopes near the Serra da Marofa. The vineyards feature a rich mix of native grape varieties, including Sria, Malvasia, and Arinto for whites, and Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, and Alicante Bouschet for reds. Surrounding the vineyards are cork oaks, wild forest, and natural clay ponds that retain rainwater, contributing to a self-sufficient ecosystem.
Pioneering organic viticulture in Portugal, Quinta do Cardo began its transition in 2009, deepening its commitment in 2021. This sustainable approach preserves local biodiversity and enhances the natural balance of the estate, making it one of Portugals most distinctive and environmentally conscious wine producers.
Production
Organically grown Tinta Roriz and Jaen grapes were used. Only the free-run juice (“tear” must) obtained after pressing the entire bunches was fermented in stainless steel tanks at around 14C. A brief aging period on its fine fermentation lees followed. This vegan and gluten-free wine is crafted by Jorge Rosa Santos and Rui Lopes.
Tasting Notes
This ros presents an open colour and an elegant aroma, evoking flowers and red berries, reflecting its high-altitude (750m) origins in Quinta do Cardo’s granitic and schist soils. The 2023 vintage, an atypical year, has produced a wine that is light, fresh, and very balanced on the palate.
Elegant aromas reminiscent of flowers and fresh red berries. A mild flavour profile that is light, fresh, and exceptionally balanced, with good acidity typical of the region.
Ideal for starters such as light sausage platters, pts, and bruschettas. It also pairs well with fish and seafood (including grilled fish, roasts, seafood dishes like octopus rice, and ceviche), vegetarian dishes, and characteristic cheeses from Beira Interior.
