Rondo and Dornfelder might sound like two of Father Christmas’s reindeer, but these winter-hardy German grape varieties make a pleasingly fruit-forward red wine not dissimilar to Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley. Soft and smoky in style, with creamy and plummy notes, its slightly spiced character will go very nicely alongside a slow-braised beef casserole or even beetroot falafel.
