One of Portugal’s largest and most progressive producers with 600 hectares spread across estates in five regions from Douro in the north to Alentejo in the south. Winemaker Francisco Antunes oversees what must be one of the most diverse ranges in Europe, from the 3rd largest Portuguese rose brand (Casal Mendes) to some of the country’s most impressive premium reds from estates in Douro, Dao, Bairrada and Alentejo. Arguably, Francisco’s greatest achievements lie between these extremes, a range of mid-priced wines from native varieties, full of character, quite distinctly Portuguese, but at the same time approachable and with fresh, modern fruit.
Vineyards
This estate at Vila Nova de Tazem, in Gouveia county, has poor quality, granite soils.
Vinification
85% Touriga Nacional, 15% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo).
Matured for 12 months in French (80%) and Russian (20%) oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
A single estate Dao, combining classic Portuguese character with polished, modern winemaking.
Lifted aromas of wild black fruit, off-set with some spicy, smoky notes. The palate has black cherry, mocha and some grip – well-balanced by fruit acidity – to give an elegant yet structured wine with a fresh herbal, black fruit finish. Some savoury development on the palate adds complexity.
Excellent warming winter wine with robust stews and roast meat.
