The name “Pusser’s” is derived from the slang term “Purser,” which referred to the ship’s supply officer responsible for distributing daily rum rations to sailors. The tradition of providing sailors with a daily ration of rum dates back to the 17th century and was a longstanding naval tradition.
In 1970, the British Royal Navy decided to end the daily rum ration, a practice that had been in place for centuries. However, before the tradition came to an end, Charles Tobias, an entrepreneur and sailor, managed to obtain the rights to the recipe for the Royal Navy’s rum blend.
